Meet Ištá Wí (ishtawi) — Lakota for Moon Eye, my first mare. 🌙👁️

One brown eye, believed to see clearly in the bright light of day.

One blue eye, known as a “watch eye”, said to see into the spirit world.

I don’t know if it’s legend or truth…but with her, my own vision opened. Into horses, into feeling, into the invisible.

I hope she still visits me sometimes. 🧿✨

I began riding horses at a young age, and have often been taught of them as being insensitive animals meant to obey.

In my late teens, I started experiencing horses not as tools or symbols, but as sensitive, therapeutic, and deeply perceptive beings. Two decades later, that understanding led me into natural horsemanship, animal communication and coaching with horses — not to lead them, but to listen to them.

Today, through Horse Bud, an annual magazine dedicated to horses and the humans and other animals that walk beside them, I aim to carry forward a message long embodied by horse lovers like Brigitte Bardot and Claudia Cardinale: that horses are sentient beings worthy of dignity, care, and respect. They are profound teachers — and, when met with presence and kindness, they can also be playful, generous friends with whom I dress up with, play catch, learn fun tricks, or just go out for a walk. Claudia Cardinale became the “symbolic female cowboy” and “queen of the Western plains” through her memorable roles in Spaghetti Westerns such as ‘Circus World’ (1964), ‘The Professionals’ (1966), or ‘Once upon a time in the West’ (1968).

But beyond her cinematic image, Cardinale was a natural rider and had a significant relationship with horses as a dedicated animal rights activist who specifically campaigned against the slaughter of horses and their welfare in real life, even if that meant renouncing to fame.

In the coloring book portrait of two posts ago, you’ll see a mare in the night sky, watching over her son. That’s Ištá Wí (/ishtawi/) — Apache’s mother, and my very first horse.

She was the one who truly opened the door for me to how deeply horses feel, sense, and connect. Before her, I had felt that horses could sense us…but with Ištá Wí, I knew. She validated my intuition, my sensitivity, and my connection to them in ways I’ll forever be grateful for. 🤩🌙

And then there’s Apache — born into my life, and still walking by my side 23,5 years later. He has been my greatest teacher, my mirror, my fire. The bond we share is deep, mutual, and endlessly loving. He loves me so much — and I him — and I feel profoundly blessed for every day with him. 🔥🤍

Circa 2001 or 2002. She was my first horse…and in many ways, my first mirror. 💞

Ištá Wí (pronounced /ishtawi/) had a brown eye and a blue eye. I read in a book that in horses like that, Native Americans believed that the brown eye was to see during the day, and the blue eye — which they called moon eye — was to see during the night. I wanted to honor where that belief came from, so I called a Native American reservation to find out the translation. Sadly, they’ve been so removed from their own culture, they didn’t really know and had to look it up in a Lakota dictionary. Ištá Wí is what they figured out, and I loved it so much, that that was it. 🤩

Ištá Wí carried me through a chapter of life when I didn’t yet understand how deep the horse-human bond really goes.

Gentle, wise, and full of heart, she taught me more than I ever realized at the time.

As Samhain (pronounced /saawin/ or /saawen/) comes to a close, I honor her spirit — not with sadness, but with gratitude for the path she set in motion. 💫

I’m eternally grateful to Ištá Wí. She opened my heart to the higher kind of love horses carry within them. 💖

Ojo Azul — the first horse who made me believe horses can hear our thoughts.

I loved speed. Whenever it was my turn to gallop in class, I’d tell him in my mind to hit pedal to the metal…and he would! 🤗 He’d skid around the corners of the arena like a four-legged race car, and the teachers would immediately yell at me to slow down. 😅

Out loud I’d say, “Slow, Ojo Azul!”
But in my mind I’d whisper, “Ignore that… GO!”

And he always “listened” to my voice inside every single time. 😍 And he only speeded when I’d ride him. ⚡️

Last year, remembering he had starred in a Tulipán commercial from the 80s (he’s the black and white Paint horse), I went searching on YouTube…and there he was — jumping poles alongside Nube Gris (the brown and white Paint horse), another horse from my riding school.

Seeing him again felt like finding a piece of my childhood soul.

Honoring him today — my energy-reading, telepathic, blue-eyed teacher. 💙🐎

Sevilla (Andalucía, Spain), age 2 — the day my love story with horses began. 🥰

My aunt’s then boyfriend had me sit on a horse for the first time. It was the white horse in the back. His name was Tranquilito — because he was very calm. ☺️

Tiny-me, already mischievous and curious, crawled up his neck and tugged his ears (for “scientific research”, of course 🤓) just to see if he truly lived up to his name.

He didn’t move.
He didn’t get bothered.
He just breathed — steady, kind, and patient.

In that moment, his sweet gentleness towards me stole my heart forever. 💘

Tranquilito was my first horse love…the first to awaken this path I walk today.

This was indeed for Halloween back when I was 10 years old. I did not get the memo that we were supposed to go in pink, and I obviously did not assume it. 😅 I think that’s why we got 2nd place instead of first. 🤪

I don’t think Ojo Azul, the pony, really dug all that dress-up and make-up, but I’m happy to have this pic of him and me together. Somehow, it’s the only photo I have with him, when I rode him every week for about 7 years.

He was one of my greatest teachers — the first to show me how deeply they can feel us, our energy, and reflect who we are. Miss the guy and the quiet lessons he gave me. 💙

Four hours in the rain became a quiet lesson in trust and energy. Sometimes the calmest rides come when we simply tune out the noise, listen, and let the horse show us who they really are.

🤗 Meet Airam.

I had had my horse Apache for about 21 years when I thought it was about time he had a stable relationship (pun intended). 😛 He had had roomies before, but they came and went.

The thing is I was set on having a white horse (the responsible for my love of horses is a white horse when I was 2 y-o), but only met one at another barn and didn’t seem the right fit. I was very hesitant because it had to be the right fit both for me, but also for Apache, who was gonna live with him. But how would I know if a new horse would get along with mine if both horses didn’t meet first?

So…I told Apache, “Hey, you work your magick and figure out how to bring to these stables a horse that’s a good fit for the both of us, I’ll know he’s “the one”, and will snatch him.”

Well, 2 weeks later, this brown Spanish horse came to the stables and it just looked glowin’! ✨ And guess what? He was fo’ sale! 😍

He had a different name and was used for tourist rides (who most don’t know how to ride), but I changed it to Airam, which means “freedom” in Canary Islands’ Spanish. He is now free from being ridden by strangers all the time and not really developing a connection with anyone in particular.

Stable relationships are so important!! Now we buds fo’ life! 🥰
